If you head on over to robertsspaceindustries.com you’ll see a screen like the one captured above. The little question mark doo-hickey asks for the answer to the Ultimate Question, which anyone who’s ever read the legendary Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy knows is 42. (You have no idea how smug I felt when that log-in actually worked.) At that point you’ll see a message from Wing Commander creator Chris Robers revealing his intent to make a new game, or in his words, “And if you would indulge me I would like to create a world for you.”
More from Mr. Roberts:
With the power of today’s computers and the reach of the internet I finally feel I have the tools to build the connected experience that I always dreamed of. A world that would be more satisfying and richer than any film I could work on.
With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds.
If you’ve played my games, you’ll know that’s what I love to do.
I’m here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.
For more you can then register and receive a (virtual) Roberts Space Industries ticket for a slot in a 10/10/10 GDC Online presentation. It also notes the game’s development will proceed over “the next 24 months” so we’ve got a bit of a timeline for release.
At this point there’s very little else to add or get particularly excited about, but here’s to hoping for something special in a couple of years.

I’m pumped for Cloud Imperium. I know I shouldn’t jump on the hope/hype train, but the “golden” pass has me packing for a nice trip.
Wing Commander, Freelancer, Privateer was my staple over X-Wing/Tie Fighter (outside of LAN parties).
“101010″ is binary (base 2) for the number 42. So, the answer is right there, “hiding” in plain sight, with no need for Douglas Adams references.
As for the game… I’ll wait and see. I hope Mr. Roberts can indeed build the space game of my dreams (something like Battlecruiser 3000AD, but good – or something like X3, but with a more dynamic, less “section-based” universe). I’ll keep an eye on it.
I didn’t catch that, I thought the binary was just a cutesy way of pimping the 10/10/10 reveal date, until I just realized the year is, in point of fact, 2012. Sigh. I’m old.
Well it is….

Awesome. There is a through lack of space felines these days.
