This is quite the week for PC and console gamer alike. If you’re into games, there’s a pretty good chance that something is either coming out this week or has already come out that interest you. If you’re not into games, I have to wonder why you’re here, other than the occasional recipe and the chance to ogle me. Come to think of it, that’s an excellent reason to be here. Carry on.
We got you covered if you like blasting aliens, being a supernatural assassin, bending magical creatures to your will via combat, Kinecting your way through Fable, Harry Potter and Dragon Ball Z or shaking your booty to the finest dance hits. And that’s just what I could think of off of the top of my head. Enough blather, let’s get started.
I’m leading with XCOM: Enemy Unknown (360, PC, Download) because none of the ads I perused this week mentioned the game at all. That’s just wrong. Granted, coming out the same week as the financial juggernauts that are Pokemon and Just Dance aren’t going to get you on the cover of the Best Buy ad, but still. XCOM has a long, storied history and it wouldn’t kill folks to give it some ad love.
I played Dishonored (360, PC, PS3) at E3 and it was one of my favorite games of the show. In fact, as far as my most anticipated releases, this is the last one for me before I can put 2012 in the books. How sad, then, that I won’t be playing it for a while until I finish my first run in Borderlands. Sorry, Dunwall, but Pandora needs me!
It’s Monday, which means that children everywhere, including myself, have stayed up way too late collecting Pokemon in Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2. For the record, I am still going with Tepig from the start. The idea of a roasted pig Pokemon is too tasty to pass up.
Fable: The Journey lets you build a lasting bond with your horse, something you haven’t been able to do since My Horse and Me 2. Or Red Dead Redemption, provided you could keep it alive long enough to bond with it. Oh, yeah, and it’s Fable! On Kinect! Whee!
Dragon Ball Z and Harry Potter both get the Kinect treatment this week, no doubt giving fans the experience they’ve been clamoring for. In the case of the former, you can play Dragon Ball Z in first person mode for the first time, and in the case of Harry Potter, you can have your face scanned in so that you can be a wizard in the game. Both cases will probably end in horrifying results.
Hey, kid, do you like pirates? Well, Port Royale 3 (360, PS3, PC) has plenty of pirates. Seriously, this game is lousy with pirates. It also appears to just be lousy. Oh well, Port Royale 3, better luck next time?
Code of Princess for the 3DS has elements of a fighting game, a side scrolling beat ‘em up and an RPG, oh and co-op too. It’s also from Atlus, which means it could be weird, or hard, or both.
I know that you’ve really been hoping for a free to play, action, multiplayer game on your 360. Happy Wars is that game, so yay for you. Oh, and please stop hoping for things before polio comes back.
My kids have played Just Dance 3 on the Wii more than any other game. Just Dance 4 (Wii, 360, PS3) will probably get a similar amount of play time. It’s also a hoot for when company is over. I have no idea if the Kinect version is any good, but for the Wii, the last two games have been an absolute blast.
