Calendar Man – Week of 2/18

calendar man revengeance shot 1

Welcome to the “Dudes in Weird Suits” edition of Calendar Man. It’s Raiden vs guy from Crysis! Woohoo! I have Metal Gear: Revengeance heading to me from GameFly and I’m looking forward to stopping Dead Space 3 to play it, trading in one guy in a metal suit for another one along the way.  In other news, there are some strategy offerings this week as well as Assassin’s Creed: III’s first bit of evil King George DLC.

New Releases

To date, the only Metal Gear game I’ve ever played is the Twin Snakes remake for the GameCube. Those were the days, when Silicon Knights was still considered to be a good developer. I found the gameplay to be OK but the cinematic frippery to be way too overbearing and I have never touched another Metal Gear game since. With Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PS3, 360) being a) an action game and b) a Platinum game, I’m sure I can find plenty there to keep me interested. The Famitsu review mentioned that parrying is pretty important and hard to get a handle on early on in the game, so maybe I’ll just stick to casual and spend all of my time slicing up staircases.

I have never played a Crysis game and I don’t see that changing with Crysis 3 (360, PS3, PC). I saw Crysis 2 at E3 and while it was damn pretty, it looked like yet another pretty shooter with scripted moments. I need more to my shooters than just good looks. If the reviews of Crysis 3 end up being good, I’ll certainly take a look, but right now these games seem to be more about flexing visual muscle than providing new gameplay experiences.

March of the Eagles is not a strategy game in which you defend the planet against an army of ruthless, avian predators. Instead it’s about the Napoleonic War. Ho-hum. I mean, yeah, that’s cool too. Napoleon. Rad.

Finally, if you haven’t had enough fun in Assassin’s Creed III, you can play the first part of their alternative reality DLC in which George Washington decides to become King because democracy is for wussies. A Valley Without Wind gets a sequel, the Capcom Arcade Cabinet hits for the 360, as does Serious Sam Double D XXL, and DmC gets the Bloody Palace DLC. Yay, more demon slaying!

I’m no great fan of Metal Gear, yet I keep buying the damn things. I have Twin Snakes, Snake Eater HD, and 4 all here unplayed. I did the first on PSOne and that was it.

With that out and Crysis not my cuppa, back to Fire Emblem for me. I have played sixteen hours in the past five days, which is huge for me. It’s fun, challenging, and epic. It’ll be in my top five games of the year easy unless we have an amazing summer and fall. Worth having my 3DS for on its own, but I am a strategy nut.

That’s my week. I have Rune Factory Frontier and maybe a cheap copy of Burnout Paradise if I bite on it waiting to take up my free time.

I’m still seriously crushing on Dead Space 3. At just past the 9-hour mark, the story vignettes that define the major areas are working very well to flesh out the larger plot. It’s everything I felt the previous game failed at. I’m also really liking how the crafting system makes you choose between upgrading things you already have, like your suit, or designing new components for your weapons.

Otherwise, the cross-buy feature on Sly 4 sold me a copy of that in the Best Buy sale, and I’ll be interested to see how the reviews turn out for that Metal Gear game. Like Mark E, I’m haven’t been a fan of the rest of the franchise.

After trudging my way through Crysis 2, the third game is a definite pass. Strong reviews might turn that around, but I sincerely doubt they will.

Well, I’m a HUGE Metal Gear fan so pshaw on y’all.

I’ve got two copies coming from Gamefly, very excited. NOTHING has really interested me lately, but getting back into that Kojima zone sounds really good to me. I can definitely handle playing something that’s very auteur, artful, and balls-out ridiculous. I’m also hoping Platinum gets back on track after Anarchy Reigns, which lasted about an hour in the console. Maybe if more than zero people were playing online, I dunno.

But yeah, I’ll try to do a full review on Revengeance at some point.

Crysis 3…I liked 2 a lot, but I’m just completely uninterested in that kind of game right now.

One more huge Metal Gear fan here, already preordered Revengeance (aka game with best name in forever). And hyped about it, to say the least – can’t wait to recieve my copy of the game. But since we dirty Europeans gotta wait couple more days than Americans, I’ll have time to finish MGS2 and 4 again (1, 3, Portable Ops and Peace Walker already done), just in time for Rising :)

I don’t doubt the quality of the gameplay, it’s Platinum after all, and demo was great for such a small slice of the game itself. That said, I’m more interested in the story. Kojima didn’t write it, but it’s still his universe, and he’s there as a producer, so I guess it’s gonna be up to the task.

And regarding Anarchy Reigns, I think it’s really good, if a bit chaotic. *But*, waiting for 5+ minutes to get full teams in multiplayer modes sure is painful. (DeathBall is worth it just for the craziness I’d say, try it if you haven’t yet!)

Oh, and gotta say: looking forward to your Revengeance review!

Say, BTW- who is rushing out to preorder Destiny? No release date, no screenshots…but I hear the preorder bonus a is a pack of Destiny-branded magic beans…
