Bungie’s Next Game: An MMO

Sometimes, rumors are true and at GDC last night Bungie’s David Aldridge made it official: they’re doing an action oriented MMO to be published by Activision. Details are less than scarce other than a quote saying that the game will not be “WoW in space.”

Activision now has Call of Duty and potentially the Halo community under its umbrella…and going to a persistent online world.

Can the Internet survive?

  1. I’m betting this was their approximate accounting report…. and it’s hard to argue against.

  2. It’s Call of Duty in space! *ba dum tish*

I joke, but I would not be surprised at all if that’s what it turned out to be. I’m pretty confident in Bungie’s abilities as a developer, but I’m less confident that they are big enough to avoid being Activisioned. I guess they did do Halo, so that’s something.

  3. It’ll be good to see Bungie work outside their comfort zone. As I see it, Bungie got a bye with Reach. A polished game, but basically a victory lap around the nostalgia track. An MMO, even if it were a Halo FPS themed one, would be a huge gear shift for a company that’s basically been cruising in 5th since 2004.

  4. Oh dancing with myself
    Oh dancing with myself
    Well there’s nothing to lose
    And there’s nothing to prove
    I’ll be dancing with myself

    Oh, Oh, Oh.
