Diaspora: Shattered Armistice Trailer

YouTube video

Up to this point I knew absolutely nothing about this game, but Battlestar Galactica fans, this freeware mod for Descent: Freespace 2 is for you. Hopefully the game itself is at least half as cool as this trailer for it. Seriously, it makes me want to go suit up. Right. Now.

If only I knew what became of my old CH Flightstick Pro and accompanying throttle. Not that myPC has an serial ports to connect them to. My goodness, it really has been a long time since the days of Wing Commander and X-Wing/Tie Fighter. And just why did I never get around to the Freespace games? Folly, I tell you. Pure folly.

Spotted at RPS.

  1. “Never got around” to Freespace?!

Freespace + Silent Threat and Freespace 2 were collectively one of the defining moments of my gaming life. They are absolutely essential playing, and thankfully the FSOpen project has kept them from aging too badly (If you get the settings right, it can be a gorgeous looking game) so they can still be enjoyed, along with the RIDICULOUS amount of community-made content that is available for it. Strong voice acting, the scope and variety of missions and a meaningful, if not all that deep storyline all work brilliantly to complement the excellent space shooter mechanics that I would argue still hold up well today.

I beseech anyone that has any interest in space combat games and has not played the Freespace series to go forth and experience these games with all haste. Joystick (Force feedback supported!) highly recommended, though I understand that there is a mod available that gives Freelancer style mouse control that is vastly superior to the default mouse control.
