Calendar Man – Week of 7/22

shadowrun returns shot 1

Not a lot going on this week in the releases department. Shadowrun Returns makes its debut, and with it, the hopes and dreams of Kickstarter fans everywhere. There’s also a new NASCAR game as well as games for the new Smurfs movie. Mars War Logs hits the 360, the PS3 gets a new Hot Shots game and Stealth Inc: A Clone in the Dark releases for the PS3 and the Vita.

Having finished the high voltage wiring for my basement, I now turn to low voltage wiring. Good times. When I do get time to game it will be all Just Cause 2, all the time. The vehicle controls are a little dodgy but you have a grappling hook and that makes up for a lot.

Calendar Man – Week of 7/8

ncaa 14 shot 1

It’s July which means football season! Wait, what? Oh, right, college football. I understand that’s a big thing with some people. Those people may be happy to know that NCAA ’14 (PS3, 360) comes out this week. Then again, maybe those people won’t. I have no idea what goes on in the heads of people who get wrapped up in a system that can’t figure out how to do a proper championship.

In other news, Dark comes out for the 360. Early reviews are not promising. PS3 owners can play every Metal Gear Solid game ever created by human hands, or at the very least quite a few of them with the The Legacy Collection. Civ V gets the Brave New World expansion, Guncraft hits the PC and The Walking Dead: 400 Days hits iOS. I played 400 Days on the PS3 and it’s pretty good. It doesn’t have the same weight as Season One, but seeing how it’s a bridge episode, I wouldn’t expect it to.

Nothing like a US and Canadian holiday smack dab in the middle/beginning of the week to make sure nothing comes out. There may be other reasons, but that’s what I’m going with. As for deals, there ain’t nothing too hot either. Best Buy is offering BioShock: Infinite for $39.99 and Toys R Us is offering Metro: Last Light for the same price. If I had to choose between the two, I’d go with Metro but both lack the personality that made their predecessors so compelling.

So there you go. Enjoy your holiday. If you’re not in the US, enjoy your Thursday.

Calendar Man – Week of 6/17

Muramasa Rebirth shot 1

It’s the week after E3 and all game journalists are either hunkered down, furiously typing away at all of the preview pieces borne from last week or passed out from booze and/or exhaustion. Whatever the case, it’s a light week for releases as you can pretty much guarantee zero coverage. At least that’s my theory. I have been wrong before. New Super Mario Bros U. gets the Year of Luigi DLC, the Vita gets Muramasa Rebirth and the Jak and Daxter Collection. XBLA gets two, count ’em two Dungeons and Dragons ports in Dungeons and Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara. Meanwhile, the PC gets Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition, MotoGP 13, Magrunner; Dark Pulse and Dracula 4: Shadow of the Dragon.

Calendar Man – Week of 5/13

Metro Last Light shot 1

This week sees the release of the first THQ property of the post-THQ era. Metro: Last Light (360, PC, PS3) must have been pretty much done by the time THQ closed its doors, so hopefully the restructuring will have minimal impact. It is winging its way to me as we speak, and I would imagine Barnes and Bill are also going to play it, so it should be a Metro-palooza ’round these parts.

In other releases, Dust 514 does the free to play thing on the PS3, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance gets the Blade Wolf DLC and Anomaly 2 does the tower offense / RTS thing.

Me, I started Deadly Premonition last night. It’s very weird. I’m also enjoying the hell out of Nolan North’s performance in Spec Ops: The Line, even if the combat is somewhat generic and the Heart of Darkness allusions are a bit thick. Etrian Odyssey IV has been shown the back burner in favor of Eclipse and Transformer: Legends with the latter occupying more and more of my time. Card management is hell!
