War of the Roses Beta Signups

From the desk at Paradox:

NEW YORK – July 6, 2012 – Paradox Interactive and Fatshark announced that, after recently completing a successful closed alpha, sign-ups for a chance to participate in beta testing for upcoming medieval multiplayer combat title War of the Roses has now opened to the public. Starting today, players can enroll to be a Knight in the King’s army and help restore order to England by visiting the following link: http://www.waroftherosesthegame.com/

When signing up to guarantee their access to enter the beta, future knights will obtain a unique referrer URL from the King that can be shared across social media channels. When five friends use this player-specific link to sign up for the beta, the player who is linked to the URL will be granted a secure spot in the beta.

I saw this back in January in Stockholm and it looked pretty damn good, particularly if you were a fan of the multiplayer component of Mount & Blade: Warband.

War of the Roses First Gameplay Trailer

YouTube video

Paradox has unveiled the first bits of gameplay footage for War of the Roses, the company’s upcoming online medieval battle sim. This looks incredibly Mount & Bladey, eh?

Todd got a hands on look at this one when he flew out to Sweden for the Big Paradox Convention (party). He had this to say then:

An online-focused game of authentic medieval combat set in the dynastic civil war era of 15th century England in which the houses of Lancaster and York fought for the country’s throne. It features over 60 faithfully rendered weapons spread among 15 weapon classes. Armors, including light, medium, and heavy variants, are highly modable to give each player a unique look. Horses, both armored and unarmored, are included and require strategy adjustments on the battlefield. A five category perk system lets players specialized in specific combat roles (offensive, defensive, support, etc.).

Paradox producer and director of business development, Shams Jorjani, without hesitation, said this game is “going to be one of the best online combat multiplayer games ever released.” And, certainly, it fulfills Paradox’s stated goal of not trying to out-feature other games, but instead focus on one gameplay component and execute on it. In that vein, this is the dream game for fans of the multiplayer piece of Mount & Blade: Warband.

Paradox Shows Off Its 2012 Lineup

No High Scores

Note: I wrote this about six hours ago and, of course, the wireless here has been non-functional all the live-long day, so I’m only getting to post it now. It figures, the one time I’m timely with something…. sigh.

I just got out of the Paradox Convention 2012 press conference, in which we heard from CEO/”Lord Protector,” Fred Wester as well as their business development specialist and producer/”Corporate Paladain” Shams Jorjani. Now, it’s imporatnt to note these sorts of things are built with the express agenda of getting people like me to say nice things about the company. This cannot be denied. That said, it’s really easy to like this company.

There was a lot of talk about improved sales numbers (seriously, these guys are making money hand over fist), but it’s how they’re thriving –by focusing on publishing into niches that other larger publishers tend to ignore– that makes Paradox interesting. I’ll write more about this stuff later, when I’m not running out of time before dashing out to start a day-long stint of game demos. But for now, here’s the stuff they’ll be showing off this week, which includes three newly annonced titles (no, really, they were just announced for the first time in the last 30 minutes; for once, I’m timely):

The new three…
